How it's made

BENGglas in practice

When making a monumental building in Arnhem more sustainable, BENGglas completely fitted the facade with hardened vacuum glass.

The executor of the project – Achterberg Painters – touches on a number of important aspects of vacuum glass. This is what the contractor calls the good insulation value (U=0.4), the manageability and the light weight of the glass. This glass is installed in the same way as traditional insulating glass.

BENGglas in practice

What makes vacuum glass extremely suitable for the renovation market is that this glass is very thin. With a thickness of only 6.3 mm, it almost always fits in the existing frames and they do not need to be replaced.

The residents also notice a big difference with the traditional double glazing. The reason for switching to vacuum glass was the improved insulation value, but they are also very pleased with the increased living comfort. This way they don't feel a 'draught' and noises from outside are muffled.

The entire project took only 2 days. The installation of the glass is taken care of by the national BENGglas dealer network.

The production of BENGglas

The vacuum glass production line has a length of 400 meters and annually produces 120,000 square
meters of toughened vacuum insulating glass.

1

Glass cutting

The glass is automatically cut to size. The largest format that can be manufactured is 1,750 x 3,000 mm ( BENGglas PRO).

2

Edge processing / polishing

This is the process of removing the sharp edges from the edges. This creates a nice smooth edge finish.

3

washing process

Before the glass can be further processed, it is necessary that this glass is completely cleaned.

4

To drill holes

Here the holes are drilled in the glass. These holes are necessary to be able to vacuum the glass at a later stage.

5

Printing / printing

After drilling the glass, it can - optionally - be decided to have this glass printed / printed. This is done in a clean room.

6

Harden

One of the most important steps in the BENGglas production process is the tempering of the glass. By toughening glass, it is five times stronger than ordinary single or double glazing. In the event of a glass breakage or impact, the glass shatters into very small particles without sharp edges. BENGglas is the only toughened vacuum insulating glass in the world!

7

Vacuum process

Finally, the glass arrives in the vacuum process. The glass is cleaned again, the spacers are added, the panels are joined together, the edges are finished and all free air is removed. This eventually creates a vacuum that is responsible for the extremely good insulation value (U=0.4).
