Monument glass

What is monument glass?

Monument glass is thin insulating glass designed specifically for historic and monumental buildings. BENG's monument glass combines an extremely slim construction starting at 6.3 mm with an insulation value that is up to 2× better than triple glazing. Where other monument glass often does not fit, BENG glass's monument glass can almost always be installed in the existing window frames while gaining significant comfort and energy savings. So cultural heritage remains protected, but with the comfort of today!

  • From only 6.3 mm glass thickness
  • Fits almost always in existing window frames
  • Maximum insulation: up to U=0.40 - 2× better than triple glazing
  • Long lifespan: up to 50 years
  • Extra-quiet living: noise reduction up to 39 dB
  • Monumental appearance: possible in combination with drawn monument glass (with corrugation) from 12 mm
  • Color neutral or extra clear vacuum glass
  • U-value tested by IFT Rosenheim (2025)

The power of BENG glass

Monumental glass with unique performance

Regular monument glass consists of two panes of glass with a space in between filled with noble gas. This offers a certain degree of insulation, but cannot match the effect of a vacuum cavity as used in BENG glass.

With BENG glass, heat and cold are virtually not let through. As a result, the insulation value of monument glass is significantly higher than with traditional solutions, while the total glass thickness remains much slimmer. As little as 6.3 mm, a U-value between U=0.40 and U=0.50 is achieved.

Insulation values compared:

  • Triple glazing: U=0.70 (36 mm)
  • HR++: U=1.10 (21 mm)
  • Other monument glass: from U=1.5 (14 mm)
  • Old double glazing: U=2.8 (14-18 mm)
  • BENG glass monument glass: U=0.40-0.50 (from 6.3 mm)

Monumental glass: historic glass with an authentic character

Monumental glass is specially developed thin insulating glass that in some cases has a slightly wavy surface. You often see this wavy surface in beautiful old buildings.

This drawn monument glass provides those subtle distortions that make historic windows so unique. Want to preserve that authentic look when renovating? Then BENGglas Monu or BENGglas Monu Restover is your solution. This way you get the best of both worlds!

Would you rather not have a wavy surface for your monument?
Then choose BENGglas Extra Clear or BENGglas Single Coated! These types do not have a wavy surface but often fit into the existing window frames of monumental buildings. Always discuss the possibilities within your municipalities before making your choice.

Monumental glass with the best insulation value, fitting any frame!

In old monuments, you often find single- or old-fashioned double-glazing in the window frames. Do you want better insulation? Then you quickly think of HR++ or HR+++ glass. But that is thick glass, so you often have to replace your window frames. And that often means losing the character of your building. Or even worse: sometimes it is not allowed at all, because it falls under protected heritage. In short: preservation seems difficult.

BENG glass has the solution for monuments!
Monument glass from only 6.3 mm thick that almost always fits into existing window frames. And the insulation? It is much better: twice as good as triple glazing and even three times better than high-efficiency double glazing! Do you currently have single-glazing (U=5.8) or old double-glazing, also called Thermopane (U=2.8)? Then you are making a giant leap forward.

You notice it right away:

  • A lower energy bill (U=0.40 - 0.50)
  • More comfort, less cold drafts and considerably less noise from outside (-36 dB)
  • Fits into existing window frames, from only 6.3 mm
  • Twice the expected life span of standard insulation glass, up to 50 years

So your monument not only remains beautiful, but also future-proof!

BENG glass Monu with Restover or Monument glass?

There are many types of monument glass where two sheets of glass are separated by a cavity filled with air or noble gas. BENG glass takes a different approach and uses a very high vacuum of only 0.3 mm.

Thanks to this vacuum, a insulation value is achieved that is up to two times better than that of triple glazing, while the glass thickness starts as low as 6.3 mm. This makes high-quality insulation possible without major modifications to existing window frames.

Insulation values and thicknesses compared:

  • Triple glazing: U=0.70 (36 mm)
  • HR++ / high-efficiency double glazing: U=1.10 (21 mm)
  • Monumental glass from other providers: from U=1.5 (14 mm)
  • Old double glazing / thermopane: U=2.8 (14-18 mm)
  • BENG monument glass: U=0.40-0.50 (from 6.3 mm)

This makes BENG glass particularly suitable for monumental renovations, where limited space and preservation of the original appearance are essential.

Our product range has been further expanded recently. We now offer the following types of monument glass:

✓ Heavy drawn monument glass (BENGglas Monu Restover): especially suitable for homes built before 1930, where the glass has a more distinct undulation and thicker profile.

Slightly warped monument glass (BENGglas Monu): applied to homes from the year 19230 to 1965, with a more subtle, slight curve.

✓ Modern monument glass (BENGlas Extra Clear or BENGglas Single Coated) - often has a flat appearance appropriate for properties from 1965 onwards

What you need to know before choosing BENGglas Monu Restover

BENG glass Monu Restover combines authentic appearance of monument glass with maximum insulation - perfect for monumental properties where a strong corrugation in the glass is desired or required.

Be sure to note a few important points before you choose:

Do you want top insulation, but wavy/drawn glass isn't necessary? Then BENGglas Extra Clear or BENGglas Single Coated are excellent alternatives.

What is the warranty for monument glass with BENG glass?

Because BENG glass has an expected lifetime of up to 50 years, we offer a warranty that is twice as long as traditional insulating glass, up to 20 years.

Specifically for monument glass, BENGglas offers the two models below and their warranty periods:

Should the insulating effect of your BENGglas lose its effect within this period, BENGglas will supply you with new panes free of charge! So you can be assured of years of energy savings.

Monumental glass insulation value: why BENG glass performs better

The insulation value of monument glass varies greatly by type of glass. Whereas regular monument glass is usually filled with air or noble gas, BENG glass uses vacuum glass. There is a very high vacuum of only 0.3 mm between the glass sheets. Vacuum allows virtually no heat and sound to pass through, making the monument glass insulation value with BENG glass significantly better than traditional solutions.

Thanks to this technique, BENG glass achieves a very low insulation value even at a glass thickness of 8.3 mm. Depending on the version, the U-value of monument glass is between U=0.40 and U=0.50. This includes BENG glass Single Coated, Extra Clear, Monu and Monu Restover.

Looking for ultra-thin monument glass without waviness? Then BENG glass Single Coated 6.3 mm is a suitable choice. Despite the minimum glass thickness, a monument glass insulation value of U=0.50 is still achieved.

Insulation value of monument glass compared

The lower the U-value, the better the insulation value of monument glass. The comparison clearly shows that BENG glass insulates significantly better, while the glass thickness remains limited. This is particularly essential in monumental buildings in order to preserve existing window frames.

To illustrate:

  • Triple glass: U=0.70 (36 mm)
  • HR++ / high-efficiency double glazing: U=1.10 (21 mm)
  • Monumental glass from other providers: from U=1.5 (14 mm)
  • Old double glazing / thermopane: U=2.8 (14-18 mm)
  • BENG monument glass: U=0.40-0.50 (from 6.3 mm)

This combination of a very low monument glass insulation value and a minimum glass thickness is exceptional within the world of insulation glass and makes BENG glass particularly suitable for monuments and listed buildings.
