BENGglas in practice

When making a monumental building in Arnhem more sustainable, BENGglas completely fitted the facade with hardened vacuum glass.

The executor of the project – Achterberg Schilders – highlights a number of important aspects of vacuum glass. The executor mentions the good insulation value (U=0.4), the handling and the light weight of the glass. This glass is installed in the same way as traditional insulating glass.

What makes vacuum glass extremely suitable for the renovation market is that this glass is very thin. With a thickness of only 8.15 mm, it almost always fits into existing window frames and does not need to be replaced.

The residents also notice a big difference with the traditional double glazing. The reason for switching to vacuum glass was the improved insulation value, but they are also very pleased with the increased living comfort. This way they don't feel a 'draught' and noises from outside are muffled.

The entire project took only 2 days. The installation of the glass is taken care of by the national BENGglas dealer network.

Testing and measurements by Tüv Rheinland according to CE and NL Building Decree

The BENGglas is tested here, in collaboration with the Flat light dome, by TÜV Rheinland in accordance with CE and NL Building Decree.

This concerns the determination of the insulation value (Ug), LTA and ZTA.

Within this fragment, various tests are exhibited: resistance class in case of manual attack (EN356 burglar-resistant glass), residual load capacity by means of impact load test (EN12600 security glazing) and the fall-through safety test.

Apply for a subsidy for vacuum glass from BENGglas

ISDE subsidy is available at BENGglas . This is 23 euros per m2 and can be requested with reporting code KA18780.

If you also replace the window frames, you can use reporting code KA19317. You are then eligible for a subsidy of 65.50 euros per m2.

If you take two insulating measures, these amounts double.

This video explains how to apply for this subsidy!

Glass bead bag pendulum test - BENGglas '23

The glass bead pendulum test is intended to test the fall-through safety of a floor edge barrier construction.

The Dutch Building Decree specifies the legal frameworks that a building must comply with. As soon as there is a chance of falling off an edge where there is more than 1 meter of fall height, a floor separation construction is mandatory.

The Dutch Building Decree contains the dimensions that this construction must comply with and reference is made to the Eurocode NEN-EN-1990 for demonstrating safety.

The following must be demonstrated:

  1. Ultimate limit state of the fundamental combinations (i.e. the static calculation)
  2. Special or extraordinary load combinations: analytical & experimental (glass bead bag pendulum test)

According to the Building Decree, 1 + 2 are both designated to jointly guarantee safety. The glass bead pendulum test only demonstrates the experimental load combination, i.e. fall-through safety.

BENGglas has met the requirements of this glass bead bag pendulum test.

Breakage test of BENGglas

BENGglas is the only toughened vacuum insulating glass in the world!

Tempering glass has several advantages:

  • The glass is up to five times stronger than normal single or double glass of the same thickness.
  • If the glass breaks, it shatters into small particles with no sharp edges.
This makes it safe for injuries, prevents cuts and makes it official safety glass.
  • Thermal breakage is completely excluded

Ball drop test by BENGglas

The "ball drop test" tests the mechanical strength of the glass.

The production of BENGglas

The vacuum glass production line has a length of 400 meters and annually produces 120,000 square
meters of toughened vacuum insulating glass.

Glass cutting

The glass is automatically cut to size. The largest format that can be manufactured is 1,800 x 3,000 mm ( BENGglas PRO).

Edge processing / polishing

This is the process of removing the sharp edges from the edges. This creates a nice smooth edge finish.

washing process

Before the glass can be further processed, it is necessary that this glass is completely cleaned.

To drill holes

Here the holes are drilled in the glass. These holes are necessary to be able to vacuum the glass at a later stage. These holes will be sealed later in the process with a vacuum valve and absorber cap.

Printing / printing

After drilling the glass, it can - optionally - be decided to have this glass printed / printed. This is done in a clean room.

One of the most important steps in the BENGglas production process is the tempering of the glass. By toughening glass, it is five times stronger than ordinary single or double glazing. In the event of glass breakage or impact, the glass shatters into very small particles without sharp edges; as a result, BENGglas is also officially designated as safety glass. BENGglas is the only toughened vacuum insulating glass in the world.

Vacuum process

Finally, the glass arrives in the vacuum process. The glass is cleaned again, the spacers are added, the panels are joined together, the edges are finished and all free air is removed. This ultimately creates a vacuum that is responsible for the extremely good insulation value (U=0.40).
